Hyakunin Isshu #77 – We Will Meet Again

Se wo hayami Iwa ni sekaruru takigawa no

The creek’s current flows swiftly, and the rapid current is divided by rocks. However, just as it reunites as one, even though I am now separated from that beloved person, I believe that we will surely meet again someday.

Sutoku-in (1119 – 1164)

What resonates with me the most in this piece is the natural harmony of relationships. Despite the unpredictable nature of the world, individuals destined for one another will always find their way back and discover peace. I also find it beautiful how this piece implies that relationships are beyond our control. We, as humans, flow like water in a river, and it is important to recognize that no one truly holds the reins when it comes to relationships. It is all too easy to place blame on ourselves or others, but in reality, none of us are in the driver’s seat.
